Be your own boss with a high-powered industrial pressure washer

If you’re an aspiring entrepreneur that's looking for a new career path, have you considered starting a pressure washing business? It’s an excellent way to say farewell to your 9 to 5 job and it doesn't cost the earth to set up either.

With low startup costs low compared to other types of businesses, the profit margins can be terrific. Furthermore, the skill is relatively easy to acquire. The key steps you would need to take this type of business forward are as follows:
  1. Decide how you want to set up your business, as a sole trader or a limited company.
  2. Buy or rent your equipment – a high-powered industrial pressure washer, high-pressure and low-pressure hoses, nozzles, surface cleaners, dual lance, reels, vehicle (van or truck), soaps and chemicals, etc.
  3. Learn the skills – there are numerous tutorials on “how to pressure wash” on YouTube. Using these tutorials as a guide, you can practise your craft by borrowing a friend’s power washer or renting one for a few days, blasting away built-up grime from your patio furniture/decking/driveway/walls.
  4. Decide on Your Target Market - you need to decide exactly who your target customer will before you set off on your start-up journey. For example, are you going to cater to commercial, industrial or residential clients?
  5. Determine the scope of your services - some businesses focus on specific jobs such as general maintenance, restoration, paint removal, windows, roofs, or gutters. Or you could specialise in cleaning drains and pipes. You could even offer additional home services, such as window cleaning.
  6. Set Your Price - the price you charge for your services should be high enough that you yield a handsome profit, yet low enough that you remain competitive. Research what your competitors are charging as a guideline.
  7. Keep it legal - make sure you get all the correct licences too, and insurance to shield your business from legal liability.
  8. Embrace Social Media - by having a presence on social media, you’ll establish a credible reputation, attract new customers and drive traffic to your website.
  9. Consider Joining an Association - becoming a member of WJA: The Water Jetting Association will help you network with other business owners so you can grow your company in the best possible way.
  10. Oh, and ensure that you comply with Regulations.
