There is a saying that goes: 

'without hard work, nothing grows but weeds.'

Weeds have a habit of popping up where least expected, and can get in to every nook and cranny in the garden. You may be familiar with weed killers, with strong chemicals and harsh polluting ingredients. These can be damaging to the plants in the soil, and will also work it's way into water sources.
